Orangecello Cake Recipe

What follows is a Treehouse spin on a southern recipe that has graced my family table for decades. Many variations can be found in rotary club and church cookbooks. And if any of you have ever been to a church picnic then you know what I am talking about when I say that "church ladies" are some of the best cooks in the whole world. Growing up my mother's recipe consisted of bananas spread with peanut butter then rolled in crushed walnuts, although my husband remembers that his mother's recipe called for mayo in place of the peanut butter. The important thing is that we both loved it and because of that I wanted to recreate this recipe and bring it back to the dinner table. I just recently discovered Nutella, for some strange reason I had a hard time believing that it could really be as yummy as Giada De Laurentiis suggested. Let me just say that I was WRONG. Nutella is so good you will want to eat it right off of the spoon. But just in case your southern upbringing does not allow you to do that, I have created this simple dessert for your family with suggestions on jazzing it up a bit for company.

Ingredients:

  • 6 Bananas
  • 1 jar of Nutella
  • 1 ½ cup of Honey Roasted Peanuts

Zap the jar of nutella in the microwave for only 5 seconds to get it very soft and creamy then slather on the bananas and roll in crushed honey roasted peanuts. I like to leave the peanuts slightly chunky because they have a better appearance. When plating the bananas you can leave them whole or slice them in half. For an added touch you can drizzle nutella over the plate and lightly dust with powdered sugar and/or cocoa powder right before serving.

Tip--I used a zip lock bag with a small snip on the end to drizzle Nutella over the plate.

If you want to dress this up a bit for company you can replace or add any of the following ingredients: walnuts, pecans, cashews, granola, coconut then drizzle with caramel sauce then add a dollop of ice-cream.

Just in case you have not heard about Nutella you can check out this website for the complete history. Don't wait! Enjoy!!
